چکیده
BACKGROUND Management of the corn pest, western rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), relies heavily on planting transgenic expressing toxins produced by bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). This has resulted in evolution resistance to all four commercially available Bt targeting coleopteran insects. In this study, we evaluated susceptibility a Cry34/35Ab1-resistant WCR colony seedling and diet toxicity assays after removal from selection for six nine generations. addition, female fecundity, egg fertility, adult lifespan, larval development, emergence were two susceptible colonies assess fitness costs. RESULTS Susceptibility Cry34/35Ab1 was restored removed generations based comparisons relative survival, head capsule width, dry weight plant assays. Thus, pronounced costs associated with documented being within separate studies evaluating specific costs, when reared isoline did not differ between resistant colonies. However, beetles lived longer than which females producing significantly more eggs colonies, no differences fertility. CONCLUSIONS The presence cost that may contribute restoration been other Cry3-resistant populations could have significant impact deployment management practices. RECENT RESEARCH ON THE WESTERN CORN ROOTWORM Western corn rootworm ( Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) population dynamics
1 The western corn rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte is a major insect pest of field maize, Zea mays L. Larvae can cause substantial injury by feeding on maize roots. Larval feeding may destroy individual roots or root nodes, and reduce plant growth, stability, and yield. Costs associated with managing corn rootworms in continuous maize are annually one of the largest expenditures...
متن کاملInheritance and fitness costs Of field-derived resistance To Cry3Bb1 corn by western corn rootworm
The western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) is an economically important pest of corn. One strategy used to manage western corn rootworm is the planting of transgenic corn that produces one or more Cry toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Refuges of non-Bt corn function to delay the development of resistance and the greatest delay in resistance is expected whe...
متن کاملRECENT RESEARCH ON THE WESTERN CORN ROOTWORM Behaviour and ecology of the western corn rootworm ( Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte)
1 The western corn rootworm (WCR) is a historic pest with a legacy of resistance and behavioural plasticity. Its behaviour and nutritional ecology are important to rootworm management. The success of the most effective and environmentally benign rootworm management method, annual crop rotation, was based on an understanding of rootworm behaviour and host – plant relationships. Enthusiastic adop...

متن کاملEffects of refuges on the evolution of resistance to transgenic corn by the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte.
BACKGROUND Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte is a major pest of corn and causes over a billion dollars of economic loss annually through yield reductions and management costs. Corn producing toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been developed to help manage D. v. virgifera. However, previous studies have demonstrated the ability of this species to evolve resistance to Bt tox...
